The Medical Management of HIV Infection (MMHIV) is a global resource and the authors are committed to global HIV care and prevention. The 2007-2008 edition was distributed to approximately 40,000 readers in more than 60 countries and accessed by more than 10,000 additional readers online. The book has been translated into Portuguese, Chinese, and Russian. This edition includes more than 150 tables and more than 300 new references to publications or presentations made in 2007-2008, reflecting the authors? efforts to keep abreast of new developments by attendance at major scientific conferences and by systematic review of 42 relevant journals. Recommendations presented here are based largely on federal guidelines for antiretroviral therapy for adults, pregnancy management, prophylaxis and treatment of opportunistic infections, management of occupational exposure, management of coinfection with tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, prevention of transmission, and management of sexually transmitted infections.

Based on recent advances there has been substantial expansion of and change in sections dealing with adverse reactions and treatment options following virologic failure. The authors have provided recommendations based on available data and personal experiences and opinions, as well as guidelines from authoritative sources.
